From Scrap to Purpose: How Small Charms Carry Big Stories
Share
At Kalaa, we believe every piece in your home and wardrobe should carry meaning, care, and a story worth sharing. Sustainable living isn't just about reducing waste—it’s about honoring craft, respecting the people who make our products, and creating circularity in design.
That is why we are thrilled to feature handcrafted burlap bag charms, born from a unique and impactful collaboration between two visionaries in Kolkata, India: The Burlap People and the non-profit organization Ek Tara.
The Story Behind the Collaboration

1. Zero Waste, Circular Design (The Burlap People)
The Burlap People (TBP) are known for crafting eco-friendly, plant-based burlap products built to last. However, in any textile production, cutting fabric creates scraps and offcuts. Rather than letting these quality leftover materials go to waste, TBP set out to give them a second life through upcycling.
2. Empowering Women Through Craft (Ek Tara NGO)
To bring these scraps to life, TBP partnered with Ek Tara Creates, the social enterprise and livelihood arm of Ek Tara. Ek Tara is a Kolkata-based NGO dedicated to educating children and empowering women from underprivileged communities.
Through Ek Tara Creates, women receive vocational training and dignified employment, enabling them to achieve financial independence and transform their lives.
3. Handcrafted Magic
Using artisanal techniques like hand embroidery and detailed stitchwork, the skilled women at Ek Tara transform TBP’s leftover burlap and fabric scraps into charming, heart-shaped accessories and bag charms. Each charm is individually handmade, turning scrap fabric into a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art.
